Is the Jimmy Green Marine Online Rigging Service Right for You?

A step-by-step decision guide for yacht owners

Replacing or upgrading your yacht’s rigging can be challenging for the uninitiated. At Jimmy Green Marine, our online rigging service makes DIY eminently possible by combining precision-built components with a straightforward ordering process you can manage from home.

This guide walks you through the key pointers to determine whether our online rigging service is right for your boat, your schedule and your confidence level.

Step 1: Define the Scope of Work

What kind of rigging work are you planning?

  • Running rigging or lifelines – e.g. halyards, sheets, control lines or guard wires
  • Partial standing rigging replacement – e.g. one or more shrouds or stays, mast stepped
  • Complete re-rig – replacing all wires, terminals and bottle screws, typically during lay-up

Jimmy Green Marine supplies all the above. Our dedicated in-house rigging team produces professionally spliced ropes, swaged wires and custom rigging solutions on a daily basis. Our Online Custom Build System can support a complete standing rig replacement.

Please Note: An on-site survey by a professional rigger is recommended for custom rigs, rod rigging or changes to mast geometry.

Step 2: Assess Your Confidence in Measuring

Can you provide accurate measurements?

Online rigging orders require precise input — but we’ve built in safeguards to help you get the measurements and terminals right:

  • Rigging Collection Service – or send your old wires as a pattern to replicate
  • Measurement Guides and Templates – Download step-by-step documentation
  • Personal Support – Our team is available on the telephone or by email for guidance

If you are comfortable removing your existing rigging, you can complete our enquiry form or order online. Both are efficient and low risk.

Alternatively, you can ask a more experienced yachting colleague to help you take the measurements and pass them to us. The process is more straightforward with a second pair of hands, and two heads are often better than one, making it a sensible approach.

Step 3: Consider Your Timeline and Flexibility

What’s your lead time, and how much buffer do you have?

The Jimmy Green Rigging Team take pride in their rapid turnaround, typically a few working days. Rigging Lead Times are prominently displayed on our website and updated in line with seasonal demand.

If your specifications are accurate, we can produce and dispatch quickly once the order is confirmed.

Please bear in mind:

  1. For DIY Specification: it may take a few emails, photos or telephone calls to identify the correct Shroud/T-Terminals, pin and thread sizes before final confirmation of the specification.
  2. For producing rigging to a pattern: allow time for the Rigging Team to measure, assess and raise any queries that may arise before producing a final quote.

Therefore, please mention any deadlines we need to meet at the earliest opportunity, so our Rigging Team can prioritise the work schedule to best achieve them.

Step 4: Think About Local Support

Do you have access to a local yachting handyman or Club Bosun?

Having help at hand can be invaluable for processes such as identifying terminals, thread sizes and directions, and stepping/unstepping the mast.

Step 5: Confirm Your Specification and Place Your Order

  • Double-check wire diameters, bearing edge to bearing edge lengths, T-Terminal options, pin and thread diameters as required
  • Confirm all terminal and fitting types
  • Fill in our Rig Data Collection form OR
  • Use our Online Custom Build System OR
  • Send us your rigging as a Pattern OR
  • Pack up your rigging and request our Collection Service

The Jimmy Green Rigging Team will complete all the swaging, splicing and quality checks before despatching your new rigging, all ready for installation.

Please Note: We can accommodate any adjustments to your old rigging, but only if we receive clear and concise instructions, e.g., “Please make Backstay 2cm longer.”

Please advise us whether you want the old rigging back or would prefer we dispose of it for you.

Step 6: Install and Inspect

When your order arrives:

  • Compare the new components against your old ones
  • Install in the correct sequence, using safety lines and temporary stays where needed
  • Tension and tune using a Loos gauge or with professional assistance
  • Re-check after your first sail to ensure correct bedding-in
