Understanding How VAT Is Applied on the Jimmy Green Marine Website
At Jimmy Green Marine, we aim to provide straightforward, transparent pricing for all customers, whether based in the UK, elsewhere in Europe or further afield.
Because VAT treatment varies by location, some prices on our website can only be displayed accurately once we know where you are ordering from.
This page explains why you are asked to log in to see VAT-exclusive prices, how VAT rules apply to Export customers and what you can expect during checkout.
Our goal is to reduce confusion, avoid incorrect price displays and help you understand exactly how tax will be applied before completing your order.
Why You Need to Log in to See VAT-Exclusive Prices
VAT rules differ depending on the country to which the goods are being delivered.
To apply these rules correctly, the website must be able to identify your delivery destination.
For this reason:
- Prices shown to guests (customers who are not logged in) always include UK VAT.
- VAT-exclusive prices are only displayed once you have logged in and the system can check the country stored in your account.
This ensures that any VAT-exclusive prices shown are accurate and compliant with UK, EU and Worldwide tax requirements.
It prevents situations where a user might see VAT-exclusive pricing when they are not actually eligible, which would create confusion at checkout.
Once you log in, prices update across the entire website, including product pages, the basket and at checkout.
How VAT Rules Apply for Export Customers
Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, VAT now applies differently when supplying goods to all customers in EU countries and worldwide. Broadly:
- Orders sent to UK addresses are subject to UK VAT.
- Orders sent to Export countries (including the EU) and the Channel Islands are zero-rated for UK VAT, meaning that VAT should not be charged at the point of sale.
- However, VAT may still be due in the destination country when the goods arrive, depending on local import rules.
To ensure compliance with these requirements, the website will automatically check your registered country once you log in.
If your delivery country is outside the UK, prices will be shown excluding VAT.
Please note that under UK VAT rules, deliveries to the Channel Islands are zero-rated, and prices will therefore be displayed excluding UK VAT
This applies to both retail and trade customers. The essential factor is the delivery location.
When VAT-Exclusive Prices Will Display
VAT-exclusive pricing will be shown only when:
- You are logged into your Jimmy Green Marine account
and
- The registered country in your account is outside the UK or in the Channel Islands
If both conditions are met, your prices will update automatically to exclude VAT.
If your account address is in the UK, or if you are viewing the site as a guest, then VAT-inclusive prices will continue to display by default.
This approach ensures accuracy and prevents VAT from being displayed incorrectly before our website knows the delivery destination.
What to Expect During Checkout
Once you are logged in:
- Prices will display correctly throughout your browsing session.
- The basket and checkout will reflect whether VAT is excluded based on your delivery destination.
- If you are eligible for VAT-exclusive pricing, the tax section at checkout will confirm that VAT is not being charged.
- If VAT is included (for UK orders), it will be shown clearly before you complete your purchase.
For EU customers, it is worth noting that your local customs authority will charge VAT, a customs clearance fee and possibly import duties on arrival.
The VAT rate varies by country, but the general principle across Europe is that import VAT replaces any VAT that would have been paid at the point of sale.
For Channel Island and Export customers worldwide, the same principle applies, but the fees, taxes and duties may have different names.
Delivery to a Bonded Freight Forwarder
We can deliver to a freight forwarder for consolidation into an onward export shipment. VAT is payable initially and refunded by Jimmy Green Marine upon presentation of an official proof of export document from the forwarding service. There is a three-month limit on claims, measured from the day of supply (not the invoice date), which means items can be ordered in advance without risk to the VAT reclaim process.
Summary
- VAT-inclusive pricing is shown by default to avoid incorrect displays.
- Logging in is necessary for the website to apply the correct VAT rules based on your country.
- Export customers will see VAT-exclusive prices once logged in, as long as their delivery country is outside the UK.
- VAT treatment is confirmed clearly at checkout to ensure complete transparency.
If you have any questions about VAT, international shipping or how prices are displayed, the Jimmy Green Service Team is always happy to help.
